Water quality refers to the characteristics of water that determine its suitability for specific uses, like drinking, agriculture, industry, or recreation. It includes factors such as cleanliness, chemical composition, biological content, and sensory aspects like taste and smell. Standards for water quality vary depending on its intended use, ensuring it is safe and sustainable for human health and the environment. Monitoring and maintaining water quality are crucial for protecting people’s health, ecosystems and supporting various economic activities.
These are measurements used to quantify the concentration of dissolved substances in water.
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) refers to the total amount of inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water and includes minerals, salts, metals, negatively charged ions like chloride, sulfate and other dissolved solids. High TDS levels can affect water taste and appearance, as well as potentially indicating the presence of contaminants or minerals that may impact health or water treatment processes.
PPM (Parts Per Million) is a unit of measurement used to express the concentration of a substance in water or other liquids. For instance, 1 ppm equals 1 milligram of solute per liter of water (mg/L), which can also be expressed as 1 milligram per kilogram (mg/kg). These measurements are crucial in assessing water quality, determining the suitability of water for different uses such as drinking, industrial processes, or agriculture.
The primary difference between hard and soft water lies in mineral content, which influences its taste, feel, cleaning efficiency and health.
Soft Water (from 0 till 60 ppm):
Hard Water (from 170 ppm):
